Build or Rebuild Clusters with Optional Subclustering

Project Data-based view > Clusters tab > Build Clusters | Rebuild Clusters | selected Cluster > right-click > Build Subclusters

Requires Clusters - Add/Edit Permissions

When you are on the Clusters tab for a Project Data-based view, you can initially build Clusters and later rebuild Clusters. When you perform these operations, you can select an option to perform Subclustering based on a number of Subcluster levels (the initial default is 2, and you can select from 1 to 10 levels). You can also right-click a given Cluster and request Subclustering of that Cluster.

When you build Clusters, you will see a number of Work Basket tasks associated with the Clustering of each top-level Cluster and Subcluster while the Clustering is in progress. (Many of these tasks are temporary, and are not retained once Clustering has been completed.)

Build Clusters

When you make a request to initially build Clusters for a Project Data-based view, you will see a dialog with the following information:

  • Build Top-Level Clusters – This checkbox is shown selected and grayed out to indicate that top-level Clusters are always included in the building of Clusters.
  • Subcluster Levels – As part of building Clusters, you have the option to Subcluster based on a certain number of Subcluster levels. If you do not select this checkbox, no Subclustering will be performed as part of the initial build of Clusters. If you want to Subcluster, select the checkbox and either use the default of 2 for 2 levels of Subclustering, or specify a value in the range 1-10. (Do not clear the value completely if you want the Subclustering to occur.)

Rebuild Clusters

When you make a request to rebuild Clusters for a Project Data-based view, you will see a dialog with the following information:

  • Rebuild Top-Level Clusters – This checkbox is shown selected and grayed out to indicate that top-level Clusters are always included in the rebuilding of Clusters.
  • Subcluster Levels – As part of rebuilding Clusters, you have the option to Subcluster based on a certain number of Subcluster levels. If you do not select this checkbox, no Subclustering will be performed as part of the rebuild. If you want to Subcluster, select the checkbox and either use the default of 2 for 2 levels of Subclustering, or specify a value in the range 1-10. (Do not clear the value completely if you want the Subclustering to occur.) You may notice that the Subcluster level you select for this operation will cause the level to be retained when you then perform Subclustering of a Cluster, and will stick until you Rebuild again at a different level or just generate top-level Clusters without selecting Subclustering.

Build Subclusters

As you explore Clusters, you can right-click a given Cluster and select Build Subclusters. You will see a dialog with the following information:

  • Subcluster Levels – As part of building Subclusters for a given Cluster with 10 or more documents, or performing further Subclustering, you can specify the number of Subcluster levels that you want, such as a value of 2 for 2 levels of Subclustering, or a value in the range 1-10. The level you see is either what you previously selected for a Rebuild operation, or the initial default value 2, and you can use this level or select different level. Do not clear the value completely for this operation; if you do, the Build Subclusters button will be grayed out and unavailable until you supply a value in the range 1-10. You cannot Subcluster if the Cluster does not have at least 10 documents.

Cluster or Cancel the Operation

When you have decided on your Subcluster levels, you can either build or rebuild your Clusters or cancel the operation, as follows:

  • Build Clusters | Rebuild Clusters | Build Subclusters– Proceeds to build or rebuild the Clusters, or Subcluster a Cluster, for a given view. You will see a spinner with a message indicating that Clustering is in progress for the view (e.g., Clustering <viewname> in Project Data). In the Work Basket, you will see a Cluster task with the name of the view being clustered. If you performed Subclustering you will also see a Cluster WB task for that operation.
  • Cancel – Cancels the Clustering operation.
