Requires Synthetic Documents - Add/Edit Permission

Once you use New Synthetic Document to create a Synthetic Document, you are redirected to this tab for the new Synthetic Document. This tab enables you to add content to your Synthetic Document and/or add a comment to describe your Synthetic Document changes. You can also use an empty Synthetic Document if you want to search for documents without text. Regardless, you must save the Synthetic Document at least once by clicking Save before you can perform any Search by Synthetic Document operation. Remember to save any changes you make as well.

Note: Synthetic Documents with content are most useful when you populate them with a block of text, not just a series of terms. A Synthetic Document containing only a single term from a document will not yield a very high similarity score for a Search by Synthetic Document operation. (To perform a term search, use a Search such as Freeform Search or Advanced Search.) Synthetic Documents are intended to hold more substantial content. When performing a Search by Synthetic Document operation, select the appropriate threshold value to control the level of similarity required for a match.

Populate the Synthetic Document and Add a Comment

To initially populate or update the content of a Synthetic Document, you can do one of the following:

  • Type terms right in the Synthetic Document Text box.
  • Highlight or copy text from any document that you have open and paste it into the text box. The Document Viewer enables you to highlight or copy text from a document or email you are viewing and then use Add Selected Text To > Synthetic Document to append the highlighted or selected text to the Synthetic Document.
  • Copy text from into the Synthetic Document.

You can optionally add a comment to describe your Synthetic Document Text content or content changes:

  • CommentEnables you to add a comment to help you characterize the Synthetic Document Text content and/or changes to the content.

Perform a Search by Synthetic Document

When you have settled on the Synthetic Document content and have saved your changes at least once, you can click the Search by Synthetic Document button to set up and run a similarity search using the Synthetic Document and a target view you select.

Save or Discard Changes to the Synthetic Document

  • Save (active at all times) – Initially saves the Synthetic Document with content or empty, or applies subsequent changes you have made to the Synthetic Document. Click this button after you have typed content in the box or copied text and pasted it in the box, or purposely want it to be empty to search for documents without text. If you try to Navigate away without applying your changes, a popup will ask you if you want to save your changes.
  • Discard Changes Cancels the changes you made to the Synthetic Document.
