Requires Project - Password Cracking - View, Add/Edit Permissions

If the Known Passwords mode is enabled, you can view and manage the list of Known Passwords to use for document reprocessing in the Project. Since this mode processes the passwords exactly as they appear in the list, this is the least intensive of the optional password cracking modes.

Checkbox Selection and Known Password Information

The Known Passwords list provides a list of supplied passwords used by the software as part of reprocessing. This paged list supports filtering using a Filter text box. The Known Passwords List provides the following:

Note: Selected:<value> displays the number of items currently selected. When you select the top checkbox, a message indicates that you have all items selected in the current view (across all pages). For example, if you use the top-level checkbox, you will see the message Selected: All 2315. If you use the individual checkboxes on a given page, a message indicates how many items you have selected on this page. For example, if you have selected all items and then deselect one item from the current page, you will see the message Selected: 99 on this page.

  • (top-level checkbox) — Use the checkbox that appears at the top of the list to select all items for an intended action. To clear the selection of all items, clear the top checkbox.
  • (per-item checkbox) — Use the checkbox to the left of an item name to select that item on a given page. To clear the selection of an item, clear the per-item checkbox. Use the per-item checkbox to select one or more items on a given page for an intended action. If you select one or more but not all documents in a given list, the top checkbox changes to to indicate that one or more items have been selected, but not all items.
  • Password (default sort column) — Identifies a password that is part of the Known Passwords list. By default, the passwords are sorted in alphabetical order (ascending) as indicated by a fixed sort indicator . Note that leading and trailing spaces in a password are retained.
  • Date Added (optional sort column) — Identifies when the password was added, in the format yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss or Today HH:mm:ss (for example, 2020-10-31 03:35:15 or Today 12:30:15). If you sort by this column, the sort, upon first click, is in descending order (most recent date).
  • Source — Identifies how a given password was added to the Known Passwords list. This column will display either the filename of a text file, Manual (for typed or copied and pasted passwords), or Found Passwords (for imported Found Passwords). By default, this column shows All Source information, but you can use the drop-down Filter box to show only Known Passwords from a File (all filenames), imported Found Passwords, or Manual passwords. This column is not sortable.
  • Filter box Filter | drop-down selectionYou can use the Filter text box under the Password column to filter the list of Known Passwords, and you can use the drop-down Filter box to filter the Source column based on a drop-down selection (which defaults to All). (The Filter text box has an icon to indicate that filtering is available.) Using the Filter text box for the Password column enables you to pinpoint the Known Passwords you want to match based on a Filter term search containing one or more characters you enter. You can explicitly apply a filter by typing one or more characters in the text box and clicking Enter (the return key). What you specify is not case-sensitive. If you type one or more characters in the text box, the software will automatically apply the filter for you, and the text box changes to a yellow background color. For any applied filter, you can then clear the filter by removing the text in the box and clicking Enter, by removing the text from the box, or by clicking the that appears at the far right of the Filter box. Clearing a filter restores the list to its original state. (Note that any column with a Filter text box cannot be moved.)

Known Passwords List Options

You can use the following options to manage the Known Passwords list.

  • Add Passwords... – Launches the Add Passwords dialog, which enables you to either load a local text file of passwords, or supply the passwords manually (by typing the passwords in the popup or copying and pasting passwords into the popup).
  • Import Found Passwords... – Enables you to import the list of Found Passwords into the Known Password list. When you select this option, an information popup provides this message: All Found Passwords will be imported. Duplicates will be skipped. Click Continue to perform the import, or click Cancel to cancel the import. If you click Continue, another information popup will report the number of unique Found Passwords imported, and how many duplicates were skipped (for example, 80 unique Found Passwords were imported. 10 duplicates were skipped.).
  • Delete Selected – Enables you to delete selected passwords (or all passwords) from the Known Passwords list. In order to perform this operation, you must select at least one item (or all items) using the appropriate checkboxes. A checkbox appears next to each item name, and the top one enables selection of all items listed. When you select this option, a popup asks you to confirm the deletion of your selected passwords (for example, Delete the 5 selected passwords?). Click Delete Passwords to proceed or Cancel to cancel the operation.

Paging Area, Download, and Close Options

In the paging area, which allows you to select pages of the Known Passwords, you can also select the following:

  • (requires Document Reports permissions) – Enables you to download the Known Passwords information to a local file (the KnownPasswords.csv file). The file will include the Password, Date Added, and Source columns. If you have not filtered the Known Passwords information, the download will include the entire list with all information. If you have filtered the list of Known Passwords, the download will include the filtered list of information.

Each page can display up to 100 items.

Below the paging area, you can then select the following:

  • Close – Closes the popup and returns you to the main Password Cracking window.
